Thank you very much for the id suggestion gatorfellows! After reading up on this caterpillar, these little fellows were right at home!
Thanks Karen! Perhaps the mission shouldn't be made available if it is retired. I'll check out the Southern Romance for spottings appropriate for such a site.
May I suggest contributing to a new mission that is documenting the mating habits? Here is the link, http://www.projectnoah.org/missions/1201...
I agree, with KeithRoragen, that this is a Giant Stag Beetle (Lucanus elaphus)
I concur with KeithRoragen. My first thought was the Giant, but erred when deciding on Lucanus swinhoei. Keen eye for KeithRoragen!
The larva of the moth Helicoverpa zea? The larva has many names depending on the source of its food. This one is on corn and is thus called a Corn Earworm. Had it been feasting on a tomato, it would be referred to as an tomato fruit worm.
I have no idea how those items got there. Thanks for pointing it out - I've re-posted and hopefully they'll stay put.
Hi,
You are correct. It looks to be an Althea bush, Rose of Sharon (Hibiscus syriana)
