Long-billed Curlew

Numenius americanus

Description:

Largest nesting sandpiper in North America. The length about 2' and bill is about 8" long with females being longer then the males. Small head and long neck and long legs.

Habitat:

Winters in the western part of North America. Found in wetlands, tidal estuaries, mudflats, flooded fields, and some beaches.

Notes:

Spotted these in a bird sanctuary on Alameda Island.
