American Avocet (winter plumage)

Recurvirostra americana

Description:

Large wading bird. Breeding plumage has a light reddish head and neck. White body with black lines on the black. Bill is long, black and upturned. Bluish grey legs. Winter plumage lacks the reddish color and has a light grey instead.

Habitat:

In breeding season they are found in marshes, beaches, prairie ponds, and shallow lakes. Feeding in shallow water or on mud flats

Notes:

While taking pictures of other shorebirds I turned around and spotted this one.
