Tongareva Biodiversity

Tongareva Biodiversity

Hakono Hararanga is our Community Environmental Society and many of our islanders are members. We teach the children how to live sustainably and we expect them to contribute their wildlife photos to our Noah Project: Tongareva Biodiversity. We conduct research on sea turtles, coral distribution, climate impacts and marine pollution. We do beach cleans and tally the plastics. Some of our seabirds migrated elsewhere in January 2016 ~ it was too hot for them here. We'll note when they return. To achieve our aims we'll hold workshops to show folk what data we need, then they can grab images on their phones and upload here. We are actively restoring our damaged forest habitats: many trees died last year from climate impacts and no rainfall for months. Sign in to join mission

Tongareva is a remote atoll in the South Pacific far from any place. Human population is small, leading a mostly subsistence way of life ~ we gather our resources from Nature. Our ecosystem is pristine, but we are now severely impacted by climate change, especially coral bleaching. Another huge impact is all the oceanic plastic arriving on our shores from the consumer world. We are documenting the birds, corals, fishes, plants and various insects. We also record any environmental impacts.
