A worldwide community photographing and learning about wildlife
Tenodera sinensis
The egg case of the Chinese Mantis (and other mantids as well) is made of substance that looks foamy and wet when laid and hardens when dry. It is lightweight and stiff (very much like an insulating foam for houses). Mating and egg laying take place in the fall. The eggs overwinter in this mini fortress that protects them from the elements and from most predators. The cases are usually laid on a stiff stem (tree or large shrub most often) above the ground and what might be a snow line over the winter.
Suburban garden. Montauk Daisy.
