Nyctanassa violacea
This is an averaged sized heron of about 61 cm in length. The head is black with a white crown and cheek patch. Eye is red. The rest of the plumage is gray. Legs are yellow.
Typically found near water, where they hunt food. Nests in trees or on the ground in protected locations, such as islands and wetlands.
Yeah, I did get them mixed up. Thanks for catching that. I've got it incorrectly keyworded in my database as well. There were several black-crowned in this general vicinity and I must have batch-keyworded in with those. That's cool (that I got a shot of a yellow-crowned, not that I mis-identified it). Thanks to both of you.
Gordon, like Nick suggested, this is a Yellow-crowned Night Heron. I'm sure you accidentally mixed them up. It's unlike you to get an ID such as this wrong.
Great shot!
