Barred Owl

Strix varia

Description:

Barred owls are large owls that prefer dense forests. They feed primarily on voles and mice, but will occasionally take birds, amphibians, and have been reported wading into water to capture fish.

Habitat:

ypically found in dense forests. I typically find them in floodplain forests, but they are apparently adapting well to wooded suburban yards. This last Christmas, we had one "join" us for dinner as it was perched just outside the dining room window for about four hours.

I was going through photos from a trip to Florida when I posted this one. I really need to go back. Lots of photography that could be done there. Lots of places I'd like to visit again, including the Everglades, Big Cypress, Corkscrew Swamp, Ding Darling, and Dry Tortugas. All are great spots for birdwatching and photography. Then there are those places that I haven't had a chance to visit yet...grin.
