Red Harvester Ant

Pogonomyrmex barbatus

Description:

A large (for North America anyway) ant with a dark red body. These ants have large underground nests with an entrance surrounded by a widely dispersed shallow mound of excavated material

Habitat:

Dry areas, most commonly deserts.

Notes:

These ants bite and sting and it hurts like no other. I found that out the hard way when I was 10.
