Black caterpillars that appear to have a red segment when the light hits them just right. These just hatched from the eggs that are visible in the foreground.

Sure could be. I don't know anything about them other than some I've seen in photos but they didn't have hair. I'll start looking into it. Thank you misako.hill!

could they be sawfly larvae? I read that they tend to cluster when they feed.
