Polygonia satyrus
I was very excited to find this beautiful orange and black butterfly! This is a "genus of butterflies with a conspicuous white mark on the underside of each hindwing, hence the common name Comma. They also have conspicuous angular notches on the outer edges of their forewings, hence the other common name Anglewing butterflies." - Wikipedia
Palomar Mountain forest about 5300 feet in elevation. According to Wikipedia, this butterfly is primarily found in Western Canada. BugGuide says it's found in "Much of Canada and United States south of the Arctic and west and north of the Great Plains. Southward mostly limited to mountain areas, and barely into mountains of northern Mexico. East across southeastern Canada and northeastern US to the Atlantic."
This is one of only two Comma butterfly species found in California.
