red admiral butterfly

Description:

A small black butterfly with white and orange/red spots on its wings.

Habitat:

This butterfly was visiting ageratum blooms in a grassy meadow, near a creek, in rural Kentucky. Many trees are nearby, including oak, maple, walnut, and persimmon. Cultivated fields are nearby, as well as a farmhouse and a busy road.

Notes:

Bees and other flying insects were visiting the same flowers as the butterflies.
