Belonging to the family of poppies. It is native to Mediterranean Europe, spread across the continent, except in the North, and in North America, where it may be native in certain regions It is an annual plant, similar to the wild poppy, but with smaller petals, reddish / crimson paler and fruits are sub-globular and hairy.

Habitat:

Grasslands.

Yes, is an unusual form of poppy. It was the only one I saw this way while I walked in that place :-)
