Black Elderberry - Sambuco

Sambucus nigra

Description:

Black elderberry blooming along drainage ditch behind Via Pergolesi in Lido di Camaiore. This hydrophytic understorey shrub produces fruit used to make the famous Italian liquer 'Sambuco' and has inspired endless homemade recipes for elderberry wine. Medicinal uses of this plant are too numerous to list here, but include being considered a powerful antiviral agent.

Habitat:

Drained wetland in urban residential greenbelt growing in hydric sand soil.
