Red Swamp Crayfish/Crawfish - gambero 'killer'

Procambarus clarkii

Description:

Exotic crayfish which have outcompeted native crayfish and dramatically altered the local wetland ecology and foodchain.

Habitat:

La Geraldina year round stream running parallel to the River Teso then crossing under Via Italica. 2 meter wide channel with a minimal depth of 7 cm to 70 cm in winter with storm surge and flooding depth of up to 150 cm. Characterized by Gambusia and catfish species and bordered by drained riverine and depressional wetlands.

Notes:

This American crayfish was introduced to aquaculture in Tuscany years ago and has now naturalized in all of the streams and swamps from Livorno to La Spezia and probably far beyond.
