Ground Leech

Description:

small, about 4cm, dark brown, living on the ground, bite mark shown in photo 2 and 3 showing its mouthparts

Habitat:

humid tropical forest

Notes:

It was the dry season during most of my travels through Asia but the forest in Ba Be Lakes National Park was humid enough for a few leeches to be around. I discovered this one on me and then put it on my hand to photograph it. While I was getting ready for the shot, the leech bite me and began to feed. I pulled it off after I got a few shots but the bite continued to itch periodically for weeks.

I love the story. Not sure I would have let him bite, but makes a very interesting picture! Thanks.
