Mexican Heliconian

Heliconius hortense

Description:

Small to medium-sized butterfly with black body, black wings, black appendages. The wings have a thick white stripe running from front to back. Also, towards the tail, a red highlight stripe that connects from one wing to the other.

Habitat:

Found on a macadamia nut farm outside of Antigua - an area that is quite cool, rains moderately in the "dry season" and is always cool in the evening, sometimes hot in the day. There are many trees, bushes and a nice, big pond near this location.
