Giant Basket Star

Astroboa nuda

Description:

Also known as Granulate Basket Star and Naked Basket Star. They feed on plankton. Their arms grow to a length of about 38cm.

Habitat:

Found on reefs, coiled during the day often attached to gorgonians or sponges, or in dark recesses in the reef. At night they spread their arms to face the current to feed on planktonic animals. Widespread in the Indo-West Pacific region, at depths of 1 to 70m.

Notes:

Spotted this monster-looking sea star during a night dive at Dayang Beach, Talikud Island, in less than 5m of water. It was initially spread out, but started to curl in on itself the moment my torch shined on it.
