Pin Cherry

Prunus Pensylvanica

Description:

The pin cherry is a shrub or a small tree. The height of the tree or shrubs don’t usually grow higher than 30 feet. The plant blooms in May using light shade and its color of the berries are usually red or yellow. They survive for about 25 to 40 years and grow well in open places. The range for where they grow is in the Midwest/USA. The scientific name for the pin cherries is Prunus Pensylvanica. Some other names for it are bird cherry, red cherry, choke cherry or fire cherry. (They call it a fire cherry because after a forest fire it is one of the first plants to grow in that space.) Some animals that eat pin cherries are deer (they eat it in the winter), birds (they eat it in the fall) and some types of butterflies eat them too. The edible part is the flesh of the pin cherries. Also, if you have enough drupes (seeds) you can make a pin cherry wine, cool!

They grow well in open places. The range for where they grow is in the Midwest/USA
