Egyptian Vulture

Neophron percnopterus

Description:

Orange face with feathers at the back of the head, often white and black, color can be extremely variable, I saw entirely black individuals. An Endangered species and unfortunately in decline.

Habitat:

Middle East, North Africa, deserts, Savannah, woodlands, wetlands, rocky areas

Notes:

Although the Egyptian Vulture is in decline in most of its range, it has a stronghold in the Yemeni island of Socotra with an estimated 2,000 individuals. I certainly saw them daily while I was there for two weeks in February. Fairly tame, they would approach me to within 1.5m (5') or less sometimes. They know humans mean potential food and they were always around us.
