Description:

A medium sized (16mm) hoverfly; mostly dark brown to black with some yellow parts on abdomen segments; clear wings except for a few feint dark marks; large and dark eyes almost touching at centre; very short antennae...

Habitat:

Suburban fringe. This one landed on some roadside plastic.

Notes:

Not recorded in Victoria officially but found in Qld, SA and Tas so not unlikely. http://www.ces.csiro.au/aicn/system/c_12...

Thanks CBK - that's where I stalled also. He didn't wait around for a front-on shot. Might need to leave it at that.

Yes hoverfly from Subfamily Eristalinae. Unfortunately I can't tell further than that.
