Royal Spoonbills

Platalea regia

Notes:

I saw these birds flying over the canals at Pelican Waters on the Sunshine Coast. I always thought spoonbills were solitary birds... but according to Argybee these ones are probably gathering together to prepare for migration.

Thanks everyone! I was really surprised when I figured out what they were, it was the first time I'd seen them like this.

I think these are Royal spoonbills. They usually hang around in pairs on the ground but at this time of year they need to all migrate to Java and beyond. So they head off in convoy.

Thanks Christy! I'll lock in the Royal Spoonbills ID. I think we only have two types in Australia, these and the Yellow-billed Spoonbill (which, obviously, has a yellow bill).

Those are spoonbills! Beautiful shots! We have the Roseate Spoonbill here in the US...not sure what yours is though.
