Ironbark sawfly

Lophyrotoma analis

Description:

About 50mm long this looks very much like the green long-tailed sawfly larvae we have on eucalyptus leaves in spring and summer - but this is nearly winter and these creatures are living within the bark of large trunked Red Ironbarks. They seem to be very active compared to their leaf-dwelling versions but apparently not interested in finding leaves. This is a strangely similar situation to the hopper found in the previous spotting http://www.projectnoah.org/spottings/109... Need some theories to explain. ie Is there something in the gum which gives them a kick?

Habitat:

Crevices within the bark of the Red Ironbark (E. tricarpa)
