Hacklemesh Weaver

Amaurobius ferox

Description:

After looking this spider up, I believe it to be an adult male due to the claws on the tips of his legs.

Habitat:

Dark, humid places.

Notes:

This spider was found crawling across the floor in my house. I captured him in a cup so I could place him outside. No harm came to this spider. I find it odd that this dark-loving spider was found in the morning in my house in winter as they are nocturnal and most commonly seen (esp. Males) during the spring.

Not a problem! Spiders have either 2 or 3 claws on the bottom of each leg, but they are very small. The things you see in front of the face that are enlarged on what looks like miniature legs are the male copulatory structures. The fact they are enlarged tells you this is a mature male. Hope this helps some :)

OK, thank you! I'm not great with spiders, so I used info I found online and it mentioned claws, so I a assumed that's what they were... Though I had never heard of spiders having claws! It's also been awhile since I've posted on here, I thought that's where it was supposed to go, but I picked other to be safe. Lol

This is a male due to the enlarged pedipalps. The only claws spiders have are very tiny and you normally can't see them unless under the microscope. I have also moved this to the arthropods category for you as that is where insects and arachnids go :)
