Palm Aphid

Cerataphis sp.

Description:

Tiny insect about 2 mm across. It's dark brown with a white skirt around it. There is a crack across the center on all three found on the leaf. The second image shows one turned over and a mite eating it. Last image shows the size. An ant was attending to one of them.

Habitat:

On a palm tree leaf in the backyard.

Notes:

"Distinguishing the two palm-feeding species requires examination of the underside. C. brasiliensis has one or more pairs of dagger-like hairs on the underside of the head, whereas C. lataniae lacks thse hairs." I'm hopeful my underside shot will allow an ID. First for Project Noah!
