Eurema hecabe hecabe
Pieridae; Coliadinae; Eurema hecabe hecabe Linnaeus, 1758. This Common Grass Yellow is a beautiful butterfly, but I sometimes discarded photos I had taken of this species because it was just too difficult to identify with any confidence. The spots on the underside of the wings are varied and sometimes very faint. There is, occasionally (as in my photos above) a rather large brown patch on the underside of the forewing, near the apex, which always looks like it doesn't belong there. Altogether, this little butterfly used to give me a headache. However, this one was easy to identify and I don't anticipate any more headaches. Please see Notes below.
This Common Grass Yellow was spotted in our front yard, visiting Pink Periwinkle (Catharanthus roseus) known as Tsitsirika in the Philippines. Plant information from - http://www.stuartxchange.org/Tsitsirika
My identification problems (with the Common Grass Yellow) were brought to an end, just a few days ago when arne.roysland posted his spotting - https://www.projectnoah.org/spottings/17....... In the Notes section, he provided a link to an illustration which suddenly made everything much easier. Thanks Arne - https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/im...
