Sea Spurge

Euphorbia paralias

Description:

Plants about 2 feet in height with tall straight stems with attractive muti-coloured leaves arranged in "zones". The leaves are triangular and thick. They are arranged alternately, with almost no stalk. a single bright yellow flower was seen on between the upper most set of leaves.

Habitat:

This plant is an invasive species, native to Europe. It is now seen in coastal regions everywhere along the beaches of Australia. This species is said to be taking over, limiting breeding areas for coastal birds.

Notes:

I have noticed this tall hardy little plant so many times but like a lot of Euphorbiacea, they usually have beautiful green leaves that develop a lime-green colour towards the apex. These plants, however, had attractive colours and they looked very beautiful against the white sands of the Victorian coast of Bass Strait.
