Dromogomphus spinosus
Black-shouldered Spinyleg (Dromogomphus spinosus) is a species of dragonflies in family Gomphidae. Like other spinylegs, D. spinosus have long spines on their legs that help in the capture of prey. True to their name their shoulders are black. The dorsal thorax has a light green I-shaped mark with pale ovals on either side. Their flight time is between late May and early September from southern Manitoba to the east coast of the US as far south as Florida. Terminal segments form a club with yellow lateral markings. Adults average 2.5 in (64 mm).
This one was basking on vegetation in a southern deciduous forest along the Modoc Trail within the Sumter National Forest near Modoc (McCormick County), SC. Stevens Creek is within 75 yards of the spotting. Key Branch is also within 100 yards of the spotting.
This is my first spotting for this species.
