Clathrus archeri
A gelatinous white mass with a thick outer coat from which erupt four reddish-pink tapered tentacles. The white base was about 40mm wide. the tentacles had a flattened outer surface but the inner surface looked like beautiful reddish-pink mesh ( like a de-seeded watermelon) Pics 2 and 3 were taken two days apart with pic 3 showing the tips of three of the tentacles about to emerge. the rest of the pics were taken two days later. Pic 1 shows the centre of the still young stinkhorn.
garden mulch in a nature reserve
I was not able to smell anything around this stinkhorn because it was still immature. The dark gleba (spore bearing tissue) are just visible on the inside of the tentacles. These are said to emit the foul odour and attracts flies. I did see a fly ( pic 5) at one stage. It will open up even more over the next couple of days. This was an exciting find for me and we made several trips to this reserve, waiting for this "egg" to erupt. Might add to this.....

i remark that the photos where of several diferent days, great work,i'am not fungi specialist, but you have several in PN,i'am sure they will elp you in the id issue, good luck and i'll be wathing in you two pages to se this year fungi spotting recolt :)
Antonio, now that you mention it - it does look like a ham roll !
Sergio, we have tons of mushrooms especially this year but I need help to ID them - very interesting and different but frustrating as well. Still, a year ago I knew very little to nothing about most of the fungi and now although I still have tons to learn, PN and friends have taught me a lot. I wish to document as many fungi as possible for this year.
We had to drive back to the place several times to see if this particular fungi was open and finally after the fourth visit I got lucky !
Wow, Leuba. It seems that you australians have a chest full of wonders to show us!
gorgeous Leuba, very strange to me ,it remind me a ham mac wrap :)
Very interesting specimen. Looks like a wrapped up cuisine in a local restaurant. Never have seen anything like it before. Thanks Leuba for sharing.
williefromwi, thank you for your kind words. This year the mushrooms are numerous and of so many different kinds. I am determined to photograph as many different ones as possible for 2012 so, when I look back I can remember what a year it was for fungi !!. I know very little about fungi and have learnt a lot from others in Project Noah. Although it's confusing and there is so much more to learn, it is just so exciting when you come across a new one..I hope I'll be able to get an ID for most of mine. I too need time to look at other people's spottings ..
very interesting, I am rather certain I have never seen this before.
A big thank you also for putting up so many different spottings of fungi, and mushrooms. When time permits, I will have to go through and do some reading on your many spottings. Your a great resource.
thanks everyone ! - I would love to go back to see if it has opened any more - sad, but I don' think I'll have the time...
Wow!!
Interesting!
Just perfect..never seen one of these..
Leuba, looks like it is a season for stinkhorns of the sp. I found a latticed one with lots of flies. No odour on the first visit. But when I revisited ,it was obvious why they are called stinkhorns.
