California Sister

Adelpha californica

Description:

Found it completely immobile and still, perched on outer edge of a rosemary (?) branch in my neighborhood as I was walking to work at around 9:00AM in the morning. Appears to have a ladybug (?) attached to its head.

Habitat:

Rosemary bush (I believe it's rosemary?), residential suburban neighborhood in the foothills of Sonoma County. Mild weather, clear skies, uncrowded and undisturbed.

Notes:

Didn't move during the entire time I was hastily taking blurry shots with my Nokia camera phone, and did not seem perturbed by how close I got, or by the loud "BING" noise of the shutter. Wondering now if it was in its death throes because of the ladybug on its head. (Do ladybugs eat butterflies? Or was the ladybug just hitching a ride?)

NuwanChathuranga: Thank you! Luckily, it stayed very still for me to focus on it with the camera.
