Cotton Stainers

Dysdercus suturellus

Description:

The cotton stainer was once believed to be the number 1 pest of FL and decimated cotton plantations around the state. Now, because of more effective means of pest control and better cotton harvesting methods, it has lost it's importance. The nymphs have 5 instars and generally are seen as "red bugs" or "blood bugs." The adults have black wings as seen in the first photo.

Habitat:

Circle B Bar Reserve, Lakeland, FL.
