Largus californicus
Small bug with round, protruding beady black eyes and a distinctive orange-yellow border around a black body. Size was no larger than tip of my thumb.
Found uphill on pavement that is lined with pepper trees, lavender and pine trees, and nearby a major road. Spotted it while walking home from work as it emerged from some bushes and scuttled across the sidewalk before stopping briefly along a gravelly area by the road. Suburban area surrounded by residential housing and businesses. Located near Pine Creek and Fountaingrove Lake. Weather was hot and dry, with clear skies.
Moved quickly. Appeared to have some kind of deformation/injury on lower half of body, at the tip (?). Not sure if this is the right species, as the images I've seen of largus californicus have an orange border all of the way around--and in these photographs, there doesn't seem to be an orange border surrounding its rear, possibly due to the above noted damage.
