Spiny Stick Insect, Phasmid

Haaniella grayii

Description:

This Spiny Phasmid is from the Genus Haaniella. There are 2 speices of Haaniella that can be found in the same area i.e. Kubah National Park, the other being Haaniella dehaani. H.grayii is the bigger of the 2, nearly twice the size of H. dehaani. Both Males & Females have false wings. Like all Haaniella species, they have an aggressive defensive stand, when provoked, they can and use their hind legs which has big spines, to lashed out in defense. Pic #1 is a Male Nymph. He is in this position ready to moult. Usually, they will from their 2 hind legs in preparation to moult. During this time, they are at their most vulnerable. During the life span, they moult around 5-6 times before they become adults. Pic #2 is a sub-adult Male Pic #3 is a sub-adult Female
