Yellow Garden Spider

Argiope aurantia

Description:

This is the first one I have seen this year. This large black and yellow spider will finish this orb web with a zipper of silk in the center. The silk is quite strong.

Habitat:

The garden is about half an acre of native plants specifically planted for wildlife. The main water source is a pond that is filtered by two gravel streams. It is on a peninsula by Lake Lewisville, TX.

Notes:

I had a few eggs sacks last fall, so I expect to see several of these in the garden this year.
