Red-shouldered Hawk

Cyanocitta cristata

Description:

Large raptor species with black, white, and brown marking on its back, a brown and white streaked chest, and the tell tale "red"ish brown shoulders.

Habitat:

Mixed forest near wetlands.

Notes:

My wife woke me up from my Sunday nap to run outside and try to get a photograph of this "huge owl-like bird." Well, it does appear to be well-fed and fluffed up, but when it took flight it was obviously not an owl.
