Monarch butterfly

Danaus plexippus

Description:

A Monarch butterfly feeding on Purple Milkweed (Asclepias purpurascens). Milkweed is a host plant for Monarchs. Other types of butterflies had been feeding on the Purple Milkweed for over a week before many Monarchs arrived on 18 May 2012. The Monarchs aggressively battled Great Spangled Fritillarys for territory in what I would describe as brief "flutter fights."

Habitat:

Huntley Meadows Park, a 1,425 acre wetland area in Fairfax County, Virginia USA. Related Resource: http://www.fairfaxcounty.gov/parks/huntl...
