A worldwide community photographing and learning about wildlife
Setophaga kirtlandii
Yellow breast with black spotting along wings. Back, wings are blue and black streaked with white. Head is nearly entirely dark blue with a white eye ring that is broken.
Strictly under young jack pines in Northern Michigan, which is currently clear cut by loggers and replanted to accommodate species. In natural setting the jack pines need to be burnt in order for the cones to open and seeds to reach the soil.
Decline to near-extinction. To visit nesting sites, it is best to visit with a guide from the Michigan DNR. They leave daily on tours from the Grayling Ramada Inn.
