Beautiful Demoiselle

Calopteryx virgo

Description:

Calopteryx virgo is a species of damselflies in the family Calopterygidae, their range is mainly Europe.

Habitat:

Lake Kerkini National Park is an artificial reservoir in Central Macedonia, Greece. Built in 1932 and redeveloped in 1980 due to silt accumulating from the Strymon River that reduced the lake's capacity for storing water. The lake is one of very rare examples where human interventions benefited wildlife. Lake Kerkini is situated along the flyway for birds migrating to the Aegean Sea, Balkan, The Black Sea and other migratory destinations, and is why it is one of the top bird-watching sites in Europe with about 300 species of protected and rare birds like the Pelican and the Pygmy Cormorant nesting or visiting the lake. Besides birds there are 32 species of fish in the lake and with the Water Buffalo they contribute to the ecosystem's equilibrium. There are 25 species of reptiles and over 4700 species of invertebrates, of which 1396 represent species found nowhere else in Greece and at least 46 new to science. At the shore of Kerkini Lake and in the mountainous forests one might see Otters, Red Foxes, Wildcats, Weasels, European Polecats, Beech Martens, Grey Wolfs, Wild Boars and Golden Jackals. Lake Kerkini and the surrounding areas which span 83,100 hectares was caracterized as a National Park in 2006, though a whole range of regulatory conservation efforts span all the way back to 1972, starting with prohibition of hunting in the northeastern part of the lake. Three conventions are affiliated with this site; "Convention on Wetlands of International Importance, especially as Waterfowl Habitat” (Ramsar Convention) "Convention on the Conservation of Migratory Species of Wild Animals" (Bonn Convention) "Convention on the conservation of European wildlife and natural habitats" (Bern convention) https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lake_Kerki... https://greeceinsiders.travel/kerkini-la...

This is not a reprimand... as you take it...! I was simply pointing out a mistake about the ecology of this species. It is indeed a pity to mislead your readers on a wrong information. The fact that I have not participated more than that in this site does not diminish the value of my skills. I also happen to know this lake and your presentation interested me. Other species of dragonflies would be much better than this Calopteryx virgo festiva. I have honoured you with my comment and clarifications. I am not hiding behind any pseudonym and if you had a little odonatological culture, you would know that I am one of the first odonatologists to have written on the sector in the 1980s and that my work and my odonatological skills go far beyond this approach of helping a few beginners to make some progress and avoid mistakes. If you want to be taken seriously, learn and avoid mistakes when they are kindly pointed out to you and you certainly have many years to go before you reach my level. Just do an Internet search for me.

Cyrille Deliry if I didn't have hundreds of pictures to document I might have done that, however, my spotting is not far from the lake and since I'm documenting all species in and around national parks or nature reserves, it is of little concequence. If people want to read more about the species there is a link to inaturalist website that can enlighten them, I see you have no spottings on this website and the only comments are those you just submitted. If you want to be taken seriously, then I suggest you contribute to this site for a couple years before you start reprimanding the users of this site.

Then this is not his habitat... you must put it in the text by saying that it lives in the Kerkini's afferant streams.

Indeed, this photo is taken from a stream that runs into Lake Kerkini.

Calopteryx virgo doesn't live on the Lake Kerkini... only on streams.
