Graptemys pseudogeographica
First false map turtle I've seen! Very exciting! We caught several in a hoop net trap, but I posted a smaller one and the largest one. They are very pretty turtles.
False map turtles are found predominantly in large rivers and backwaters, but also in bayous, oxbows, lakes, ponds, sloughs, drowned forests, and occasionally marshes. They prefer water with slow currents, places to bask, and abundant aquatic vegetation.

I know! I was beyond excited to finally see these incredible turtles! Your spotting is great - it's so hard to get a photo of them basking. I kind of cheated with these, trapping and all :)
Yay Marylou! I love the false map turtles. They are so cool with their ridged carapace! I spotted my first false map turtles just a few days ago, basking on logs on the Missouri River. Check out my spotting: http://www.projectnoah.org/spottings/115...
