The Springwater Dancer has a black stripe along the side of its thorax. The male is typically blue, but some can be violet. The female is pale brown.

I believe this is a dancer species because the wings are being held well up above, not beside the back. Springwater Dancer has a stripe on the side of the thorax, and segments 8,9,10 are all blue: http://bugguide.net/node/view/213046
I have seen something like this is South Carolina, USA as well. It was very big for a dragonfly here in the US. And a lovely color. But to fast for me to get a camera
Yes, I read Wikipedia and I realized that your spotting came from Guatemala (I know I should not go by the looks), but it looks so similar. Maybe other expert can help. If you find the proper ID, please let me know.
thanks Rieko. Yes, Wiki mentions the Common Blue damselfly as being found in Europe. No mention of the tropics, though it looks so similar. Maybe a different species found in Guatemala...
