Great Black-backed Gull

Larus marinus

Notes:

I went to the Merrimack River looking for eagles to photograph, but only saw one immature bird way off in the distance. So I started photographing the birds that were flying by me on the river. This Great Black-backed Gull looked nice and graceful coming in for a water landing, until it actually plopped into the icy water:-)

I've always loved watching gulls. Around here, photographers seem to regard them as the carp of the bird world and don't bother with them. I think they are fascinating. Great series Tom.
