Sapromyza brunneovittata
This small brown fly was about 4 mm long. The glossy thorax had three well marked pale stripes along the length of it. Eyes were reddish orange and wings were clear. Leg joints were black which was a striking feature when the fly was at rest.
Spotted in a suburban garden.

Also seen in Tasmania.
The first shot was unexpected- caught in flight. A handsome fly with its stripes. "Brunneovittata" is said to mean brown stripes.
Larvae of this species of flies are saprophagous- they feed on leaf littler and some mine fallen leaves. Others live on rotting wood.
