American Oystercatcher

Haematopus palliatus

Habitat:

Because of this specialized diet, oystercatchers live only in a narrow ecological zone of saltmarshes and barrier beaches.

Notes:

Always great seeing a bird for the first time. These two Oystercatchers gave me quite the work out trying to get close enough as they foraged down a very expansive beach after first having spotted them flying in over a colony of nesting terns I was photographing. Well worth the sweat.
