Autumn Meadowhawk dragonfly (male)

Sympetrum vicinum

Description:

I was happy to see a few male Autumn Meadowhawks after a long period of sub-freezing air temperatures -- during early winter, only the strong survive! The preceding photo set shows the first of three males spotted during a photowalk through Huntley Meadows Park; the two other males will be featured in follow-up spottings.

Habitat:

Huntley Meadows Park, a 1,425 acre wetland area in Fairfax County, Virginia USA. Related Resource: http://www.fairfaxcounty.gov/parks/huntl...
