Oak Leaf Gall

Description:

5mm wide. Red and fuzzy. soft to the touch, but firmly attached to the midvein of a White Oak leaf.

Habitat:

Urban garden.

Notes:

I believe this gall was created by an insect. My guess would be a Gall wasp.

Well, a gall is a plant's reaction to some kind of invasive element, like a virus, fungus or insect. Why particular galls takes on the characteristics that they do, I have no idea. This was a neat one that I have not seen before.

I've never understood exactly what a gall is... And how can one be so pretty and fuzzy!?
