Green Heron

Butorides virescens

Description:

I was surprised how small this heron was. Not more than one foot tall, this was "a striking bird with a velvet-green back, rich chestnut body, and a dark cap often raised into a short crest. These small herons crouch patiently to surprise fish with a snatch of their daggerlike bill." I watched it hunt a small fish.

Habitat:

Small pond in business park.

Its great, theres nothing more satisfying than watching wild animals or events in nature! Knowing that some are too naive to appreciate it! No worries :)

This community certainly has benefited wildlife as well as the people themselves. It's amazing how some animals can sense harmless people. I'm honored when an animal allows me to get a close yet safe distance. Thank you for your comments, Sam :)

I think it knew you were on Project Noah, so wasn't afraid!

Thank you Sam! Luck had a lot to do with it I think :) Also, there was a knee-high wall between us that must have made the bird feel more secure.

Great photos! How did you get so close?!

Thank you Ava! This little one was only a couple yards away so I was able to photograph it with my macro lens :)
