Red Shouldered Hawk

Buteo lineatus

Description:

Medium sized hawk. White bars on tail. Yellow legs and reddish chest.

Habitat:

Likes open areas near forest.

Notes:

These hawks have been regular visitors to our garden for years. Especially in the winter when the ground is bare. They often fly to the ground to catch small prey. I usually can't see what they catch but I did observe one eating an earthworm. Things can get pretty loud and exciting in our garden during mating season.
