Whistling Kite

Haliastur (Milvus) sphenurus

Description:

Over 50cm tall. Head & underparts light brown with pale streaks & a long, pale rounded tail. Whistling kites fly with slow wing beats & when gliding holds wings horizontal, but bowed upwards in the centre. A large part of their diet consists of road-kill.

Habitat:

These birds were spotted on a local cattle property. They are found throughout Australia, but are most common in open woolands near swamps, lakes, rivers & the coast.
