Sri Lankan Wild Elephant

Elephas maximus maximus

Description:

Trees snapped and stripped from their bark.

Habitat:

Sigiriya, near Dambulla, Matale District Sri Lanka. Lots of Jungle around.

Notes:

The driver had spotted some elephants the night before when he went to visit a friend and we were in our hotel. When he was looking for them we spotted these trees. Elephants had been there! But how long and eager we looked we did not see any elephants. Then on our way back an hour later, there they were! Very close to these trees, waiting to cross the road, like they do very often. Later from the top of Sigirya rock you could see how the jungle was separated by the road. See spotting http://www.projectnoah.org/spottings/113...
