Thecesterna humeralis
9mm in length. Upper surfaces are brown with the appearance of being dirty. Body is irregularly covered with short, scale-like white setae. Head fits into a concavity in the front of the thorax. Antenna are short and clubbed and at times completely withdrawn into concavity. Elytra are rough and each with two broad ridges running the length. Front lateral margin of the elytra extended to form a concavity that fits posterior end of the thorax.
Vacant lot in mostly rural area. Lots of legumes around.
I struggled mightily for the ID on this beetle. The basic shape is of a weevil, but the complete lack of a visible snout gave me doubts. Some advice from BugGuide put me in the right direction and after browsing through almost every genus of weevil on BugGuide, I settled on Thecesternus. I would guess it is probably T. humeralis, but I await expert confirmation from BG. Plays dead when disturbed. And yes, I could use a manicure.
