Fruticose Lichen

Teloschistes sp.

Description:

Lichen is a combination of two organisms working together, a fungus and photosynthetic partner, usually an algae. Each gets water and mineral nutrients from the atmosphere, rain and dust. Fruticose is usually tall, branching and has fruiting bodies. This one is bright orange.

Habitat:

On a hackberry tree in a bottomland forest at Clear Creek Natural Heritage Center.
